What then is Hardness Testing?

Hardness testing is the process by which a material, most especially metal, can be proven to be suitable for a particular use.

Therefore, hardness testing can be defined as the process by which a material is subjected to indentation by another material that is harder, in other to measure its resistance to permanent deformation.

Hardness testing, in other words, can be defined as the test carried out in other to ascertain the degree to which a particular material can resist deformation by another material’s penetration, usually harder than the one tested.

Therefore, we can say that it is categorically a test of strength, wear-resistance and ductility of a material, to ascertain the suitability of the material.

Why is Hardness Testing necessary?

Basically hardness test is a test of quality. That simply means that hardness testing is a test of character in relation to strength and suitability.

Technically, the test is carried out in the foundry – a place where metals are cast. It is used to determine the characteristics of metals after they have been cast.

What information does a hardness testing provide?
