How to test steel hardness?

Measuring the hardness of a steel is very important when it comes to using it for the industrial processes.

Even the semi-industrial or just the physical jobs even require to measure the hardness of steel.

Through the testing, its strength is accessed.

Strength factors include indentation, scratch resistance, and penetration.

This concept is really important to measure when it comes to using steel in engineering and practical jobs.

The harder the steel the better it could withstand in the conditions like friction and erosion.

All of these qualities are linked to hardness.

But on the other hand, it is hard to cut, trim or machine the hard steel.

Steel Hardness Test

Well, there are plenty of methods to measure the hardness of steel.

All of the tests measure the hardness in the index instead of units.

It is necessary because the hardness tests for the steel are commonly performed.

And the indices refer to the test methods needed to measure the hardness.

The most commonly used methods include Rockwell, Vickers, and Brinell.

Further, the tests are picked based on surface hardness.

Such as the Brinell is used for the surfaces that are soft.

And the Rockwell is used for the harder surfaces.

The Brinell test is one of the oldest methods to measure the hardness of steel.

It was the first test that reached the standardized level to be used for practical testing.

However, it brings a limited result.

Certainly, its usefulness could not reveal many precise or accurate results.

In the Brinell test, the indentation is permanently left on the surface of the steel.

The test performance requires forcing a ball on the steel surface at already ascertained force.

The applied force would make the ball to leave a mark on the surface of the steel.

Measuring the depth and diameter of the pressure mark brings the result.

The Rockwell steel hardness test is similar to the Brinell test.

It only differs based on the lightness used in the method.

This test was originally designed to test the hardness of the industrial graded and heated steels.

This was the comparative study between the hardness levels of both the steel forms.

In this test, the pressure is applied on the surface of steel instead of force.

The pressure is applied to different sections of the steel surface and the reading is noted.

After the completion of the test, it is compiled for the exact measurement.
