Vickers hardness testing is a multifaceted testing method that can be used for both micro and macro hardness testing. Vickers hardness test was developed by George E. Sandland and Robert L. Smith in 1921 as an alternative to the Brinell method for measuring material hardness.
Diamonds are made of carbon atoms that each have 4 electrons within them. These electrons bond with the electrons of another carbon atom and so on and so forth. This results into diamonds exhibiting their characteristic hardness.
The hardness test was developed at Vickers Limited, and it serves as the alternative test to another hardness test called Brinell hardness method which is used to determine the ability of a material to resist indentation. Vickers Hardness is also known as micro hardness testing.
In hardness test, no product is harmed or damaged whereas in tensile test it is opposite.
In tensile test, the products are stretched until they are broken so that they could exactly get the total tensile strength of the products.
For testing the hardness of metallic objects, there are a few methods, like the Rockwell hardness test, the Vickers hardness test, the Knoop hardness test, and the Brinell hardness test.
Hold the element and scratch it with any of the reference mineral. Press the unknown element with the reference one and examine whether there is any scratch on the sample or not. If the sample mineral has any scratch, then that specimen has equal hardness or less than the reference one.
Why test its hardness? It simply must be tested in order to conclude whether or not it is suitable for any sort of task (e.g. could it be used as a building material?).
