In the industrial platform, using solid and hard elements, especially metal is a common practice.
But you cannot just use anything without performing a few necessary tests.
The Rockwell hardness test is one of them, used for measuring the metal’s hardness.
There is a hardness scale named Rockwell scale which is used to express the hardness.
This method is used to determine the resistance of any hard material when an external force is applied.
When a manufacturer is looking for a perfect and appropriate item for his job, it is important to know the characteristic.
It is used for measuring lead, copper alloys, thin steel, aluminum, iron, titanium, certain types of plastics, etc.

How it is performed?
By performing this test manufacturer measure the plasticity, tensile strength and elasticity of a material.
During this test, a steel ball or a diamond is used which is known as indenter.
The indenter is pressed into the material surface to measure the penetration.
A specific load is applied, which helps to penetrate.
At first, a minor load is applied which is known as zero loads.
A reference position is established from that pressure and then a major load is added in the process.
For applying such force, the indenter passes the surface and goes inside the material.
The pressure is applied for a certain time and removed.
After repeating the process a few more times, the penetration is observed.
The difference is calculated from the reference position to the depth of the penetration after applying the major load.
With the help of the Rockwell hardness scale, the hardness of the material is known by observing the readings from the test.
Benefits of the Rockwell hardness test
As said before, the Rockwell hardness test is the most popular one for determining the hardness.
The quality control is a very important part of the industry.
So, this test helps to know how strong the material is and whether it can face extreme heat and pressure for several applications.
It is a very easy and convenient process.
There is no need to do any complex step like embedding, separation, grinding, etc. like other tests.
This is a very cost-effective way to know about any material.
The value is calculated in the easiest way and directly readable.
No need to go through all those time-consuming calculations.
The equipment is also very simple and it does not require a lot of time.
